How to Fix ‘Logged in With a Tem­po­rary Pro­file Error’ Issue on Win­dows 10 – Guide

After a recent Windows 10 upgrade, you get the error message “You are logged in with a temporary profile”. As a result of this error, have you lost all your desktop data? Every time you experience this temporary login error, you will find that it takes a long time to log into the user profile. And any changes made to this temporary profile are not saved, so every time you log in, a new profile is loaded.

In this post we will discuss how to Fix the temporary profile login error on Windows 10 / 8.1 and 7.

How to Fix Temporary Profile Login Error on Windows 10

Through the disk verification tool

  • Hold the Windows key and press E to open Windows Explorer. Right-click the C: drive if you don’t see the C: drive, click This PC in the left pane and choose the C: drive (which is where Windows is installed)
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Tools tab. Under Error Checking, click Check Now. Click Start to start scanning. If it says it cannot scan while the drive is in use, click Schedule disk check and restart the system. It will scan and repair after reboot, so don’t press any keys to cancel disk check.

    • Fixing registry entry

  • Press Windows key + R. In the run window, type regedit and press Enter. Click Yes if the UAC warning is displayed.
  • In the left pane, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand it. Now click on Software below it. Likewise, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion ProfileList
  • In ProfileList in the left pane, find the SID keys that look something like “S-1-5-21..some long number”. You will see two or more of these SID keys, most likely one will have .bak in the final and the other will be without it. The one with .bak is the link to your inaccessible profile and there will be the one which is to the temporary profile you are currently using.
  • To confirm, click any SID key to highlight it. Now, in the right pane, next to ProfileImagePath in the data line, it will be “C:Users’Your profile name is inaccessible’”. Click on all SID keys like “S-1-5-21….some long number” and delete the keys that have your profile name next to ProfileImagePath EXCEPT the one with .bak in the final. Confirm the message and click OK.
  • Right click on “S-1-5-21….any long number” key with .bak in the final and click Rename. Delete “.bak” from final of the key. Close the window. Restart your computer.
  • Now try logging into your original profile. If you’re still experiencing the same issue, we can also delete the remaining key so that a new registry key can be created.
  • Log in via the built-in Administrator account.
  • First back up all folders from C:Users’Your Profile Name Inaccessible’ by copying them to any other drive. You can later paste them into the same location to put the desktop icons and my documents stuff exactly where they were before. After copying all the data, delete the “Your Inaccessible Profile Name” folder from C:Users.
  • Navigate to the “S-1-5-21..any long number” key again. The .bak key will be there again. Delete the two SID keys whose value next to ProfileImagePath is “C: Users ‘Your profile name is inaccessible’”.

    • Run Windows Update

  • Press Windows key + R. Type ms-settings:windowsupdate and press Enter.
