How to install fonts in Windows 10/11 – Guide

Windows 10 comes preinstalled with several different fonts (depending on the language pack you’re using), but you can also find a ton of different fonts (free and paid) online. Installing these fonts on your Windows 10 PC is very easy. Managing fonts on Windows is a relatively simple process once you know where to find what you’re looking for. And what we’re looking for in this case is a built-in font management system that hides in the Windows Control Panel. Windows 11 comes with a lot of fonts, but offers several options for users who aren’t satisfied with Arial, Georgia and Times New Roman to install their own.

This can be especially useful for developers who spend a lot of time looking at text, graphic designers who think a piece needs more excitement than Verdana can provide, and writers who have convinced themselves that continually experimenting with new fonts is productive. (Hm.) Fonts can be installed on Windows 11 or 10 through the Microsoft Store, Settings, and File Explorer. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, the Microsoft Store can install a specific font in just a few clicks, but it doesn’t offer the same options as the open web.

How to install fonts through the Microsoft Store on Windows 11 or 10

The Microsoft Store is the most affordable way for most Windows users to install new fonts because it is a simple process that will hardly be used to install something malicious on your system, which is not guaranteed when you install a font from an obscure website, for example. Here it is how to install new fonts on Windows 11 via the Microsoft Store.

  • Launch the Microsoft Store. Microsoft pins it to the Windows 11 taskbar and Start menu by default, but if you’ve removed it from both places, the quickest way to get to the market is to search for “Microsoft Store” through the Start menu.
  • Search for ‘Fonts’ in the top search bar. A results menu will appear, and “Fonts” should be the main result. It’s easy to identify if it isn’t, however, because it has a nondescript icon and the caption “Explore New Fonts.” Click.
  • Click on ‘Explore new sources’ button. Microsoft dedicates a significant portion of this page to a select selection of fonts, many of which they designed, so we’ll start there.
  • Choose a source that interests you. In our case, we’ll select “Convection” because it looks like a fun sans serif we might want in our collection, but the steps will be the same for any of the fonts you choose, so choose the option that catches your eye.
  • Click on the ‘Free’ button button. You don’t even need to log into the Microsoft Store to install free fonts; you simply have to click the “Free” button button. Paid fonts do require you to sign in to a Microsoft account, however, and you’ll have to choose your payment method before confirming your purchase and installing the font you want to use.
  • Since the “Free” button switch to “Open”, you can use the font you chose. Note that clicking on the “Open” button button will not actually display the font. This simply leads to the Personalization section of the Settings app, which is exactly where we’d go next.

    • How to install fonts through Settings in Windows 11 or 10

    Installing fonts through Settings requires you to download a TrueType, OpenType, or PostScript file. Many websites offer a variety of free fonts, usually created by the user, and professionally designed fonts can be found in a variety of markets. Google Fonts is one of the best. Just be careful when choosing where you want to download it so you can minimize your potential exposure to malicious files. With all that said, here it is how to install fonts through the Settings app built into Windows 11 and Windows 10.

  • Locate the downloaded font. Most browsers automatically save downloaded files in the Downloads folder, but if you set a custom destination, navigate to it using the file manager of your choice. You can then leave the program window open or move the file to your desktop, which is what we did in the screenshot below with Google’s Roboto font. Note that if your download is zipped (in a ZIP file perhaps), you will have to extract it.
  • To install fonts through Preferences, you must download a TrueType, OpenType, or PostScript file. Many websites offer a variety of free fonts, usually created by the user, and professionally designed fonts can be found in a variety of markets. Google Fonts is one of the best. Just be careful where you download something so you can minimize your potential exposure to malicious files. With that said, here it is how to install fonts using the Settings app built into Windows 11 and Windows 10.

  • Navigate to the ‘Customization’ page in Settings. The quickest way to do this is to right-click on the desktop and choose “Custom” from the menu that appears. You can also navigate to it in the Settings app by clicking “Custom” in the sidebar.
  • Select the ‘Fonts’ option. Scrolling may be required, but there will be an option called “Fonts” with the caption “Install, manage”. Clicking on it will bring up up a page showing your installed fonts and, most importantly for our purposes, a way to add new ones.
  • Drag the downloaded font to the appropriate box in Settings. You cannot drag and drop the folder for some reason, but you can select multiple files within the folder and drop them in the indicated area to install the new font.
  • Confirm that the font has been installed. The settings will automatically show the new font as the first item in the list of installed fonts below the drag-and-drop interface to confirm that it has been successfully installed. (The fonts will be sorted alphabetically again if you return to the page.) The app will also group multiple font faces, such as Roboto Bold or Roboto Italic, under a single font to prevent duplicates from piling up up the list.

    • How to install fonts via File Explorer on Windows 11

    Installing fonts through File Explorer is very similar to installing them through Settings – it simply requires more right-clicks rather than dragging and dropping files across multiple windows. Let’s start.

  • Locate the downloaded font. As before, you’ll probably want to check the Downloads folder, but if you’ve saved the source elsewhere, you can either browse to the appropriate folder in File Explorer or use the Windows 11 or 10 search tool to locate it.
  • (Optional) Unzip the file. If you downloaded the font as a ZIP file, you can right-click, choose “Extract All…” from the menu and click “Extract” in the window that appears. Other file formats, such as .rar files, will require additional software.
  • Select the files you need. Many fonts come with various font faces (bold, italic, etc.) and weights (light, heavy, and so on) that you can use. If you want to install them all for posterity’s sake, you can select them all. If you only want to install a few of them, just choose the ones you need and ignore the rest.
  • Right click and if the installation option does not appear select ‘Show more options’ from the menu. Windows 11 has changed the ability to install fonts by right-clicking on the appropriate file and choosing the appropriate option, so you’ll have to click “Show more options” or press Shift+F10 to access it. Windows 10 users can skip this step.
  • Choose ‘Install’ or ‘Install for all users’ from the menu. Normal users can install fonts for their own use, but installing them for each account on the system requires administrator privileges. Anyway, after clicking on any option chosen, a progress window should appear, closing automatically when the font is successfully installed.
  • Preview and install. You can also skip all this by right-clicking opening the face (or faces) of the font you want to install directly. This will show a default preview of the font you are about to add and if you still want you can click the “Install” button button.
