How to Personalize Start Menu Experience in Windows 11 PC – Guide

The new Windows 11 Start menu got off to a shaky start. Although it probably has its fans, many people criticized its interface. However, if you are one of them, you can do more than just complain.

While the new Start menu isn’t as customized as the one in Windows 10, there are ways to make it look and feel the way you want. If that’s not enough, you might want to jump to a Windows 11 Start menu alternative, such as Start 11 and Start All Back, to restore a more traditional Start menu and set the look, layout, colors, and other elements.

Rearranging Icons and Pinning Applications to the Windows 11 Start Menu

  • The best way to find your favorite apps on any version of Windows is by pinning them to the Start menu. And well, you can do the same on Windows 11 too. Just click on “All apps” in the top right corner, scroll down and go to the app you want to pin in the Start menu.
  • Then right click on it and select the option “Pin to home screen”. You can also do this from the desktop or anywhere else. And, as explained below, you can also pin folders to the Start menu.
  • And voila! The app will appear in the “Pined” section on the front and center.

  • Then turn on “Show most used apps” to get recommendations of frequently used apps in the front and center of the Start menu.
  • Then, if the toggle button “Show most used apps” is dimmed, you need to enable a privacy setting to make it work. Open Settings and go to “Privacy and Security” in the left pane. Click here on “General”.
  • After that, enable “Let Windows improve startup and search results by tracking application launches”. Now go ahead and open the Personalization page once more. Now you will be able to activate the option “Show the most used apps”.
  • Also, enable the option “Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists and File Explorer”. It will give you quick access to files and programs that you access on your Windows 11 PC from the Start menu.

    • Add Folders to Windows 11 Start Menu

  • Similar to Windows 10, Windows 11 also allows you to add folders to the Start menu. Go to Settings -> Personalization -> Home and click on “Folders“.
  • Here, you can add folders like Downloads, Documents, Pictures and more to the Start Menu.
  • Folders will appear to the left of the power menu on the Start Menu. That way you can quickly access important folders in the Windows 11 Start menu, without having to scroll through pinned apps or anything.
  • If you want to add a custom folder to the Start menu, this is also possible in Windows 11. To do this, right-click on the folder and click the “Pin to Start” option. The new OS naively supports fixing folders in the Start menu, so you don’t need to use any third-party apps or adjust the app’s data folder.
  • Now the custom folder will appear in the “pinned” apps section of the Start menu. you can use this feature to keep your desktop clean and clutter-free.

    • Bring back the classic Windows 11 Start menu
