How to SetUp and Use MS Power Automate Desktop on Your Windows 10 – Guide

Microsoft has now released a new Power Automate Desktop app for Windows 10 that attempts to integrate various Windows components and aspects into the company’s automation stack. Until now, Microsoft’s Power Automate Desktop software was only available as part of a subscription plan for Windows 10 Enterprise users. Microsoft has now announced that the automation tool will be available for free to all Windows 10 users. Isn’t that amazing? In this practical guide you will learn how to to define up and use Microsoft Power Automate Desktop on Windows 10.

Before we get started, please note that the new Microsoft Power Automate Desktop is only available on Windows 10 Insider builds for now. The program must be pre-installed on your PC if you are running Windows 10 build 21337 (March 18) or later. In the coming weeks, Microsoft says it will be available to all stable users, and users will be able to download the program from the Microsoft Store. Now that we’ve established that, let’s start automating some processes.

How to Configure and Use MS Power Automate Desktop on Windows 10

If you can’t find Microsoft Power Automate Desktop in the Store, you can get it from the Microsoft website.

Open the app after it’s installed and sign in with your Microsoft account. Now select “New Flow” and give your task a “Flow Name”.

In the left pane, there are approximately 370 pre-built actions. To give you an example, you can use Microsoft Power Automate Desktop to perform “web automation” actions, such as opening Edge, navigating to a specified webpage, and more.

System actions include things like running any installed programs, taking a screenshot, shutting down the machine, and so on.

For this guide, I will demonstrate a simple task. I’m going to make the task of extracting a PDF and copying its contents to a text file more automated. To do this, go to Power Automate Desktop and search for “extract” in the Actions panel on the left and double click on “Extract text from PDF”.

Select the PDF file you want to extract by clicking the file icon. It will create a variable called “ExtractedPDFText” for you. This is where the PDF text will be saved by the app. Finally, press “Save” to go to the next step.

Click the file icon under File Path and select a location to save the extracted text with Microsoft Power Automate Desktop. I am saving in the file “a.txt” on my desktop.

Then click on the “X” button in the “Text to Write” column and select the “ExtractedPDFText” variable from the list. It is the text value we get after extracting a PDF file.

Now press the “Save” button button. Choose “Append Content” from the drop-down menu if you have multiple PDF files to process. Instead of replacing the previously extracted text, Microsoft Power Automate Desktop will add the newly extracted text after the current material.

Your stream is now complete. By pressing the “Run” button, the flow will complete all tasks in a matter of seconds.

The text from the PDF has been successfully copied to the text file.

You can add a display message box that alerts you when the job completes successfully, if you like. This makes the automated process seem more pleasant.
