Tails 5.7 syncs with the upstream software repository for the Debian GNU/Linux 11 “Bullseye” operating system series and continues to use the Linux 5.10 LTS kernel series. Tails 5.7 now introduces a new tool that can be used to clean up file metadata. The tool is called Metadata Cleaner and it is a replacement for MAT, used as a backend, it supports the same file formats and offers the same level of security.
“When we switched to MAT 0.8.0 in Tails 4.0, MAT lost its GUI and was only accessible via the file browser context menu. New Tails users found it particularly difficult to learn how to clean up your files.” Metadata Cleaner solves this problem by providing a simple and straightforward GUI for removing metadata.”
To provide the highest level of anonymity, Tails 5.7 includes the latest Tor anonymization software, including Tor Browser 11.5.8 and Tor 0.4.7.11, along with improvements to the Tor Connect Assistant. When you connect to your local network, the first screen will (simpler) and (more secure) hide comments.
However, this version still seems to have a known issue related to the Tor connection wizard where the progress bar gets stuck at around 50% when using a custom obfs4 Tor bridge. This can be fixed by closing and reopening the Tor connection wizard or switching to another obfs4 bridge running obfs4proxy 0.0.12 or newer.
Additionally, this release removes the broken pdf-redact-tools package from live systems. For details on updated components and other changes implemented in Tails 5.7, check out the full changelog. You can download it now from the official website.
