Octopath Traveler 2 review 2024: great RPG with simple gameplay

Its battle method is great. When we played Octopath Traveler 2,we were glad to see that all the things we liked about the first game were back. But what is shocking is how little it has changed in the last five years. In fact, Octopath Traveler 2 is almost the same as its predecessor, except for the stories that are being told. It’s still great in many ways, but because it’s not new, it’s not as magical the second time around. Because Octopath Traveler 2 is so similar to its great predecessor, there’s no reason not to play the first game first.

But the stories aren’t directly linked either, so if you’re thinking about starting your journey here, you should know that the name “Octopath” again refers to the eight playable characters and the paths they take through the world. You can start with any of them, and once you’ve played through their first hour-long chapter, you’re stuck with that character for the rest of the game, which means you can’t get rid of them. Then you’re free to walk around the beautiful tilt-shift world, but some places are pretty much off limits because they’re hard.

The user interface, fighting, and gameplay loop all appear to take up precisely where Octopath 1 left off, and the visuals are marginally improved but otherwise nearly unchanged. Those hoping for a more substantial overhaul may be disappointed by Octopath 2, which instead focuses on little improvements to quality of life and gameplay that are consistent with a “if it ain’t broke” mentality. Familiar systems

The rules and gameplay style from the original Octopath Traveler remain unchanged in the sequel. This is a traditional turn-based role-playing game with a few features that have appeared in other games. You battle with a party of four characters at once, but any one of them can call on support from a pool of available allies.

All of your foes have vulnerabilities that you can exploit with enough time and practice. Their health and shields will both decrease if you assault them effectively. If you eliminate all of their shields in one turn, you will “break” them and be able to deal greater damage without taking damage in return.

The universe of Octopath Traveler 2 is huge and enchanting, full of captivating storylines and memorable people who will stay with you long after you’ve finished the game. This sequel improves upon the already impressive gameplay of its forerunner, making for an experience that will keep gamers enthralled for countless hours.

Art and Music

Because of its vivid colors and striking contrasts, Octopath Traveler 2 piques my curiosity more than other games with retro pixel style. Although every scene is well portrayed, the overall effect is that of a fever dream. If you were to splash gallons of colorful paint on a picture book, it would look like this.

Octopath Traveler 2’s art style and soundtrack, which features both tranquil and intense pieces, transported me to an industrial fantasy realm. Most role-playing games that take up to a hundred hours to complete can be a genuine downer.

Octopath Traveler II is a confident and successful sequel to the first game. It builds on what worked well in the first game and adds some welcome new ideas and changes that make for an overall great experience. One of the best RPGs on Switch to date, it has a strategic fighting system, open-ended character growth, well-written stories, beautiful graphics, and an amazing soundtrack. Even though this is more of the same, Team Asano shows how good they are at what they do at every turn. We would highly suggest Octopath Traveler II to anyone looking for a beautiful new RPG to add to their Switch library.
