Less than 12 months has passed since I called the Pioneer VSX-830 “a top-performing receiver at a competitive price level” and, simply in case that appeared too dispassionate, “a miracle.” So much has happened since then. For starters, Dolby Atmos occurred, including object-oriented surround with dedicated top channels to the basic surround footprint. The Pioneer VSX-830 is a good receiver. For $399 (or under) you get a successful amp that delivers in the sound department and is 4K ready. On the downside, the 830 has a restricted quantity of analog inputs which could be a deal breaker for anyone with older tools.
