How to Get Back to Windows 10’s Dark Taskbar and Start Menu – Guide

Microsoft’s next-gen operating system, Windows 11, is coming, and a leaked version has given us a preview ahead of its official introduction next week. A revamped Start menu with a floating centered user interface is one of the main features in Windows 11. If the new Start menu in Windows 11 isn’t your cup of tea, you’ve come to the right place. To restore the old Windows 10 Start Menu in Windows 11, just follow the steps below.

At the time of writing this article, the only way to restore the old Windows 10 Start Menu with Live Tiles is to use Registry Editor, and Microsoft MVP Rafael Rivera was the first to bring this to attention. However, we can anticipate that Microsoft will add a setting to the Settings app to make this easier for Windows 11 users. If/when Microsoft adds this option, we will update this article. In the meantime, you can use Registry Editor to bring back the old Start menu in Windows 11.

Return to Windows 10 Start Menu Using Registry Editor

Search for “Regedit” in Windows Search in Windows 11 and click “Open”. You can also use Windows keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+R” to open Run and type “regedit” to open Registry Editor in Windows 11.

When the permission prompt appears upclick “Yes” to open Registry Editor.

Once in Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced

Right-click anywhere in the empty space and choose New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Now you need to define the name of the new DWORD value. Set it to “Start_ShowClassicMode” and press Enter.

Double-click the new “Start_ShowClassicMode” DWORD you created, set its value data to 1 and click OK. If you want to go back to the new floating start menu in the future, change this value to 0.

After doing this, restart your Windows 11 PC. You will find the restart option in the lower right corner of the new Start menu.

And that’s it. You’ll now get the old Windows 10 Start Menu with Live Tiles in Windows 11. If you’d rather move the taskbar icons to the left edge to match the classic Windows 10 aesthetic, check out the next section.

Move Taskbar to Left Edge in Windows 11

You might not like how the taskbar is centered by default in Windows 11. However, you can easily change this in the Settings app. Here’s how you do it:

Open the Settings app and navigate to the “Personalization” settings on the home screen. Keep in mind that you’re likely to see a slightly different settings app with a tabbed layout in future versions of Windows 11. In the customization settings, switch to the “Taskbar” tab on the left sidebar to see a new “Taskbar Alignment” option at the top. Click on it and choose “Left” from the drop-down menu.

You will immediately notice that the taskbar has been moved to the left edge, just as you would expect in Windows 10.
