How to Add Tabs to Windows File Explorer Using QTTabBar – Guide

File Explorer is the default Windows file manager. It is simple and easy to use, but lacks the feature that all Windows users want, which is tabbed browsing. Unfortunately, Windows 11 does not currently offer a native file manager with a tabbed browsing system as found in our favorite browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Edge, etc. However, with the help of QT TabBar, you can add tabbed browsing to Windows Explorer in Windows 11.

Download QTTabBar on Windows 10/7

The first step is to download the QTTabBar application (link to this) on your Windows computer. Download QTTabBar version 1038 and QTTabBar version 1040.

Extract the QTTabBar Zip folder

After the download is complete, extract the contents of the two downloaded files individually.

Install the QTTabBar.exe file

Then install QTTabBar version 1038 by first opening the QTTabBar_1038 folder and then installing it using the QTTabBar.exe file.

The installation process is the same as installing other Windows programs. Just click ‘Next’ several times and you’re done.

Install the QTTabBar update update

Now install the update i.e. the QTTabBar version 1040 update using UpdateQTTabBar1040.exe in the respective folder.

Just click the ‘Install’ button button to start the installation. It will hardly take a second for the installation to complete.

Restart Windows Explorer

Then restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. If this seems like a difficult task for you, just log in again or simply restart your Windows computer.

Now, open Windows Explorer and click on the drop-down menu, corresponding to ‘Options’ in the ‘View’ tab. Finally, click on ‘QTTabBar’.

Open a folder in a new tab in Windows Explorer

Just double-click a folder to open it in the same tab. To open a folder in a new tab, right-click on the item and click on the option that says ‘Open in New Tab’.

Alternatively, you can open a folder in a new tab by pressing the ‘Ctrl’ key and double-clicking the folder or link you want to open.

You can cycle through the tabs by clicking on each of the tabs or using the ‘Ctrl+Tab’ key combination.
