  • Place your cursor in Cortana’s search box, type Settings, and click the Settings app when you see it in the search results.

  • Now select the option that says Colors in the left sidebar. It will allow you to change your theme’s color settings.
  • On the following screen, you will see the theme preview and a drop-down menu below it. Click on this menu and select the Customize option. It allows you to specify custom color settings for your theme.
  • You will now see two new menus on the screen. You want to focus on what it says Choose Windows Default Mode. Select the Dark option from this menu.
  • Now you can scroll down and you will notice that the option is no longer grayed out.
  • Each time you change a theme, be sure to enable the option shown in the steps above so that the option is not disabled.

    The above should fix the issue for most users. However, in a rare case, if it doesn’t work for you, you can try updating your video drivers to see if that helps resolve the issue.

  • Use Cortana’s search box to search and launch the Device Manager utility.
  • You will see a list of all hardware peripherals connected to your machine. You want to find and click on the option that says Display Adapters.
  • Then right-click on the display adapter in the list and choose Update Driver.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to update your video drivers.
  • You will need to restart your computer when the drivers are updated.
  • Open the Settings app and you will see that the Start, taskbar and action center option is no longer grayed out.
