How to customize default save location in Windows 11 PC – Guide
While working as a freelancer a few days earlier for a company that is developing a market in the US for its somewhat uncertain hardware products and needed a local English speaker to tweak and refine the text on its website. Everything was going fine until my second week at work when I visited the site – and I noticed that I suddenly started getting ads flashing on my screen and I lost the ability to use my security software.
I had to get rid of everything that was intruding on my system, without letting anything change in my system. Fortunately, without having to reboot my system and waste any time reinstalling all my apps and files, I used an alternative to using System Restore.
System Restore is a Convenient feature which takes a kind of snapshot of your pc’s software, registry and driver configuration at a given time, which is called a restore point. You can then, if necessary, return your PC to that moment. You might lose some of the work done since the restore point was created, but you’ll also lose any unfortunate changes that might have been made without your permission.
In previous versions of Windows, I didn’t get much profit from restore points, but as with many aspects of the operating system, System Restore has improved a lot over the years. And it can be very useful in an emergency.
How to change the default save location in Windows 10
- Open the Settings app.
- Click on System and then on “Storage” in the left sidebar.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says “More storage settings.”
- Click on the text that says “Change where new content is saved”.
You’re taken to a new screen that displays the default save locations for six different types of data: Apps, Documents, Music, Photos and Videos, Movies and TV Shows, and Maps.
Each of these options is set to “This PC” by default. To change the default save location, click on the menu next to a data type and choose one of the available locations from the menu that opens; Windows 10 lists all partitions available on the computer.
If you want to change the save location of the apps, just click on button next to the icon and select a different drive. Click apply button that shows. You’ll see a progress cursor, wait a few seconds and you’re done. You will have to repeat this for each of the 6 options if you want to change the save location for each of the data types.
After doing this, Windows 10 will save the data on the selected partition. You may have to reopen existing applications for the change to be reflected.
Note: Windows will still create your Documents folder for each of the selected drives. It will be created in the following format: “Username Content Type ”. For example, selecting D: as the new location for pictures on my computer, I created the folder in D:AshwinPictures. It’s a shame that you can’t choose a custom folder for the saved data, but this option should be suitable for most users.
Windows 10 lets you choose different partitions for different categories. Continuing with the previous example, you can select a different unit for Documents, say E:. You can set the song to be saved to F: and so on. It also allows you to select other hard drives installed on your computer. Therefore, you can also use them to save content.
