How to Download and Install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS – Guide

Good morning Ubuntu users! On April 21, 2022, Canonical released the long-awaited Ubuntu 22.04 LTS desktop operating system. Jammy Jellyfish is the codename of Ubuntu 22.04, which is an LTS (Long Term Maintenance) release that will receive updates and support for the next 5 years. we will pass how to install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) step by step with screenshots in this article. let’s see the new features and improvements in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS before we get into the installation.

How to Download and install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Download Ubuntu 22.04 ISO file

  • Visit the following link to download the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS ISO file from the official Ubuntu portal; The following is:

    • Download Ubuntu 22.04 – Jammy Jellyfish

    Create bootable installation media

    Once the ISO file is downloaded to your system, burn it to a USB stick and make it bootable.

  • To create a bootable USB drive, use the Startup Disk Creator tool:
  • In the Show Applications search dialog, type Startup Disk Creator.
  • If the tool is not installed, the Software Center offers the option to install it.
  • In the top panel, click Other. Browse and select the Ubuntu 22.04 .iso file.
  • In the bottom panel, select your USB drive.
  • Click Make Boot Disk.

  • Restart the target system on which we want to install Ubuntu 22.04. Go to bios settings and change boot media from hard drive to USB drive.
  • When the system boots up with bootable media, we will have the following screen.

    • Try-Install-Ubuntu-22-04

  • Choose ‘Try or install Ubuntu’ and press enter.
  • On the next screen, click on ‘Install Ubuntu’

    Choose keyboard layout

  • Choose your preferred keyboard layout and click ‘continue’

    prepare the installation

  • In this step, we must choose the type of installation. There are two options, Normal and Minimal Installation. In normal installation, all GUI related apps will be installed, while at the very least only basic apps will be installed.

  • Normal installation is recommended for the best desktop experience.
  • When you have internet connection during installation and you want to install all updates and 3rd party graphics software and Wi-Fi drivers and additional media formats, you can choose both options otherwise keep them unchecked.

  • Click ‘Continue’ to proceed

    • Choose installation type

    In this step, we will be asked to choose the installation type. Here the installation type means the partitioning scheme. Following are two types of installation.

  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu It will erase the entire disk and create partitions automatically.
  • Anything else. To create your own custom partition scheme, choose ‘Something Else’.
  • If you are new to Ubuntu Linux, it is recommended to use the first option. In this guide, I will demonstrate how to create a custom partition scheme via another option.

  • Click on ‘Continue’ and then we will have the following screen,

  • As we can see, we have 40 GB of disk space for installing Ubuntu 22.04. Let’s create the following partitions on it.
  • /boot – 2 GB (ext4 file system)
  • /home – 26 GB (xfs file system)
  • / – 10 GB (xfs file system)
  • Swap – 2 GB (xfs file system)
  • To start creating partition, first create an empty partition table.
  • Select device -> Click ‘New Partition Table’

  • Click Continue,
  • Now create our first partition as /boot of size 2 GB. Select Free Space -> Click the + symbol

  • In the same way create /home and / partition size 26 GB and 10 GB respectively.

  • Click ‘OK’
  • Finally, create our last partition as 2GB sized swap.

  • Click OK to finish creating the partition.

  • When you finish the partition scheme, click on the ‘Install Now’ option on the following screen to proceed with the installation

  • On the next screen, choose ‘Continue’ to write the changes to disk.

    Choose your preferred location

  • Select the location according to your current region, it will set the time zone accordingly.

    Create user and set hostname

  • In this step, specify the local username and password. We would be using this user after OS installation. Also specify the hostname of your system.

  • Click Continue to proceed with the installation

  • As we see in the following window, the installation has started and is in progress.

  • When the installation is complete, you will be prompted to reboot your system.

  • Click ‘Restart Now’ to restart the system. Also don’t forget to change boot media from USB to hard drive in BIOS settings.

  • When the system boots up after reboot we will get the following login screen.

  • Use the same user credentials we created during installation and press enter,
