How to enter the UEFI/BIOS from Windows 11 – Guide
Gaining access to your BIOS can have huge advantages. You can actually take a look at your CPU temperature, change fan speeds, and prompt your PC to boot. Virtually all the little details of the machine’s internal functions are inside these menus, so when you enter, make sure you see what you’re looking for! In the BIOS, you can verify that you are ready for Windows 11 by checking a TPM setting! To enter your BIOS from a virus boot or reboot, when firing up the PC you need to hit the commit button to get to your BIOS, which can be F2, F4, F8 or DEL. How to enter UEFI/BIOS on Windows 11 in Settings app
One of the most straightforward ways to access UEFI/BIOS in Windows 11 is available in the Settings app. First, open Settings (Win + I) and under the System tab, click or tap Recovery. On the Recovery page, scroll until you reach the Recovery Options section. There you should find the advanced boot option. On the right side, press the Restart Now button button. Windows 11 now prompts you to restart your device. Make sure you have saved your work to any of the open files and press Restart Now once more.
After Windows 11 restarts, you will see the “Choose an option” screen used by the operating system to provide access to advanced boot options as well as other recovery tools. In it, click or tap on Troubleshoot (Reset your PC or see advanced options). On the Troubleshooting screen, click or tap on advanced options. In the list of advanced options, click or tap on “UEFI Firmware Settings”. Windows 11 now tells you that you need to “Restart to change UEFI firmware settings”, so press Restart to continue. After the PC restarts, you will be taken directly to UEFI/BIOS.
How to access Windows 11 UEFI/BIOS using Shift + Restart
A quick and easy way to access Windows 11 UEFI/BIOS without having to log in is to use the keyboard and mouse Shift + Restart shortcut. On the login or lock screen, while holding down the Shift key, click or tap the Power button button in the lower right corner of the screen and select Restart from the menu. Similarly, you can also press Shift on your keyboard and use the Restart option in the Start menu power options. After Windows 11 restarts, you arrive at the Advanced Startup screen (choose an option). There, as in the previous method in this guide, navigate to Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings and press Reset. After doing this, Windows 11 restarts and enters UEFI/BIOS immediately.
How to access UEFI/BIOS in Windows 11 Run window
Another way to enter UEFI/BIOS on a Windows 11 PC is available in the Run window. Open Run (Windows + R), type shutdown /r /o /f /t 00 and click/tap OK or press Enter on your keyboard. To access UEFI/BIOS, you can also run the slightly shorter command shutdown.exe /r /o, but it’s not as fast as the previous command.
Why not so fast? Because with this command, Windows 11 first notifies you that your computer needs to shut down (restart). So you need to wait a few moments before reaching UEFI/BIOS. After rebooting, Windows 11 loads the same “Choose an option” screen. Use it to navigate to Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings and press Reset, just like we show in the first section of this tutorial. Then Windows 11 restarts and your PC enters your UEFI/BIOS environment.
How to type Windows 11 UEFI/BIOS using a shortcut
Perhaps the fastest way to access UEFI/BIOS on a Windows 11 PC is to create and use a shortcut for it. We have already described everything you need to do in this tutorial: Shortcuts for UEFI BIOS and Windows 10 Recovery Environment. However, if you don’t have the time to read it, the short version is that you can create a regular shortcut anywhere on your Windows 11 PC and point its destination for the shutdown /r /o /f /t 00 command which we ‘ also showed in the previous section of this guide. Once you have the shortcut, double-click or double-tap it, and you will be taken to the “Choose an option” screen. In it, go to Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings and press Restart. Then Windows 11 restarts again and your PC enters your UEFI/BIOS environment.
How to access Windows 11 UEFI/BIOS using Command Prompt, PowerShell or Terminal
If you prefer command-line environments, you can run the same commands as in the previous section of this tutorial from the Windows 11 Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Terminal. Open the desired command-line application, type shutdown /r /o /f /t 00, and press Enter on your keyboard. Then your Windows 11 PC restarts and you are taken to the Advanced Startup screen (choose an option).
If you prefer to run the shorter shutdown.exe /r /o command, Windows 11 will first notify you that your computer will shut down (restart) in less than a minute. Wait. Then, after Windows 11 restarts, you come to the Choose an option (Advanced startup) screen. Use it to go to Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. Then click or tap Restart as shown in the first section of this guide. After your computer or device reboots once more, you will be taken to UEFI/BIOS.
How to type Windows 11 UEFI/BIOS on a Surface Pro (eligible models)
If you installed Windows 11 on an upgrade-eligible Surface Pro tablet, a quick way to access UEFI/BIOS is to use your buttons. First, turn off your Surface Pro. Then locate the Volume Up (+) button from the side, press and hold it. While still keeping the volume Up (+) button pressed, push and release the Power button, and wait until you see the Microsoft or Surface logo displayed on the screen. When the logo shows up, you can release the Volume Up (+) button. You should now be taken to the Surface UEFI/BIOS.
How to enter UEFI/BIOS by pressing a key while in the POST screen
On some desktop computers and laptops, you may have a chance to see a POST screen message when the computer boots up with instructions on how to access the BIOS.
