How to Make an Outline in Word – Guide
Microsoft Word uses print layout when presenting documents. This option shows the size of the paper and its borders, in addition to the text style data. Comprehension Mode, Web Layout, Draft, and the subject of this article, Outline View, are the other display options. This view in Microsoft Word is not ideal for everyone, and it is not practical to use when you are actually writing the report. Broadly speaking, the view strips a Word report of everything except its headings and subheadings where appropriate. So you can more readily focus on archiving progression and implement underlying improvements as needed. Sections in your document remain in Outline view. In any case, they are naturally shortened.

highlights view
Outline view splits the document so that each heading and paragraph is represented by a single line. Any text formatted with a heading style will automatically be set to the specified outline level, but you can adjust the outline level of a line manually using the tools on the Outline tab that appears in outline mode.
Demote or promote items
The highlight view makes it very easy to adjust a headline’s highlight level.
Promoting a topic moves it to a higher spotlight level, moving it one notch to the left, while demoting a topic moves it to a lower spotlight tier, moving it one notch to the right. You can also use double arrow buttons to promote a topic directly to Level 1, the highest level of outline, or downgrade it entirely to the body text.
Collapse and expand titles
You can collapse the content of a heading in outline mode to make the rest of a document easier to see.
- Click on the item in your document that you want to minimize.
- To collapse a section, click the Collapse button button in the Outline Tools group.
This title, along with all of its subtitles and body text, is reduced to a single line.
