How To Run Windows 11 in Virtual Machines – Guide

If you want to take a look at Windows 11 Insiders Preview Edition, you have a few options on how and where to install it. You can install it on a dedicated or spare PC, configure it up as part of a dual-boot system to coexist with another version of Windows or add it as a virtual machine.

In some ways, a virtual machine is the most effective option because it lets you control how much disk space, memory, and other resources are allocated to run the operating system. The main disadvantage is that a virtual machine can be slower than your normal operating system because it doesn’t use all of your PC’s power. However, if you have enough free space and memory, performance shouldn’t be a big issue.

Download the Windows 11 ISO file

Your first step is to download the Microsoft Windows 11 ISO file, which you can use to set up your VM immediately. To obtain this ISO file, when you need to register with Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program, which requires a Microsoft account. If you have not yet joined the Insider Program, go to the Windows Insider page and sign in with your Microsoft account. On the registration page, check the box to accept the terms of this Agreement and click register.

To download the actual ISO file, navigate to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads page and sign in with your Microsoft account. Scroll down to the Select Edit section. Click on the drop-down menu to select the edition. Here, you can choose Windows 11 Insider Preview (Channel Dev) or Windows 11 Insider Preview (Channel Beta).

The Beta channel is more stable and will contain only the features is expected to appear in this year’s official release of Windows 11. The Dev channel is less stable and will contain the latest updates and features in addition to those planned for Windows 11 later this year. Select the desired channel and click Confirm.

Then select the product language and click Confirm. Click on the Download button button for the build and language you have chosen and save the file on your PC.

VMware Workstation Player

VMware Workstation Player is free for non-commercial, personal and home users, students and non-profit organizations. Commercial organizations are required to purchase a license for $149. Get the program from its download page by clicking the Download Now link. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the steps to install it. After installation, open the program and click Create a New Virtual Machine button.

  • In the New Virtual Machine Wizard, click the Installer Disk Image File (iso) option, then browse to and select the downloaded Windows 11 ISO file. Click Next.
  • You must then select a guest operating system. Choose Microsoft Windows and set the version to Windows 10 x64. Click Next.
  • You can then name the virtual machine. We recommend giving it a name that’s easy to identify, such as “Windows 11 Preview”. Choose the location where you want to store the virtual machine and all its associated files and click Next.
  • In the next window, accept the recommended disk size for your Windows 11 environment. If you plan to keep the VM on your current computer instead of moving it elsewhere, check the Store virtual disk as a single file option and click Advance.
  • The next window shows your VM settings. If you want to change something, click Customize Hardware. For example you might want to hit up memory to 8GB or more if you can spare it. Click Close on the Hardware window and Finish on the main wizard window.
  • At the home screen, make sure the new VM is selected. Click on the Play Virtual Machine link to start the Windows setup process.
  • Confirm the language and other defaults on the first screen, click Next and select Install now button. The Activate Windows screen prompts you for a product key. If you don’t have one available right now, click the I don’t have a product key option. You can always enter a key later to activate Windows. On the next screen, choose the version of Windows 11 you want to install, such as Windows 11 Pro, and click Next.
  • Accept the license terms. In the window that asks which type of installation you want, select the Custom option: Install Windows only (advanced).
  • On the screen asking where you want to install Windows, your only choice should be Drive 0 Unallocated Space. Click Next and Windows will be installed. After installation, the Windows 11 setup process runs. You will then be able to fully test and experience Windows 11.
  • You must also enroll your VM in the Windows Insider Program to continue receiving new internal builds. Do this in Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Click the Open diagnostics and feedback link and enable the Send optional diagnostics data option. Return to the previous screen and click on the Start button button.
  • In the next window, click Link an account and select the Microsoft account you use for the Insiders program. Click Continue and choose your preferred channel – Dev Channel or Beta Channel. Click Continue, read the contract and click Continue. Select Restart Now button to restart Windows and then log in again.
  • The last step is to install VMware Tools, which improves the performance of, and others features in, your VM. You should see a prompt at the bottom of the screen inviting you to install VMware Tools; click Install Tools. Otherwise, open File Explorer, select the DVD drive (D 🙂 and double-click the setup.exe file.

    • Oracle VM VirtualBox

  • Oracle VM VirtualBox is an open source program that anyone can download and use for free. Go to the program’s download page and click on the link for your host operating system, such as Windows. Run the downloaded file, install the tool and launch the program. Click on the New icon in home screen.
  • In the first Name and OS window, type the name you want to use for the VM, such as Windows 11 Preview. Select the folder in which you want to store the VM and associated files. Choose or confirm Windows as the operating system, change the version to Windows 10 (64-bit) and click Next.
  • You should then choose the amount of memory you want to allocate to the Windows 11 VM. You will need 4GB minimum, but it can increase if you have more to spare. Click Next.
  • Accept the recommended hard disk size and click the Create a virtual hard disk now option. Then click Create.
  • Under Hard Disk File Type, select the second option, VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) and click Next.
  • In the next window, choose Fixed Size option if you have enough disk space and want faster VM performance. Click Next.
  • You must then confirm the VM path and name as well as the allocated disk space. Click Create and wait for the VM to be created.
  • Once the VM is ready, select it in the home screen. Before trying to install Windows 11, there are some settings you can adjust to make Oracle VM VirtualBox support Windows 11. Click the Settings icon and select the System tab. In the Motherboard section, uncheck Floppy. In the Processor section, increase CPUs to at least four.
  • Now click on the View tab. In the Display section, increase the video memory to 128GB and change the graphics controller to VBoxSVGA. Select the Storage tab and click on the entry that says Empty. Click the blue disk icon in the upper-right corner of the window and select Choose a disk file. Browse and select the Windows 11 ISO file. Click OK to close the Settings window.
  • With your Windows 11 VM still selected, click Start and wait for the Windows installation to start. At this point, the steps and screens are the same as for VMware Workstation Player: confirm language and other defaults, click Install Now button.
  • Enter a product key, if any; click I don’t have a product key if you don’t. Choose the version of Windows 11 you want to install and accept the license terms. Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) and choose Drive 0 Unallocated Space.
  • Windows should then install. After installation, follow the Windows 11 setup process and enter Windows.
  • At this point, you want to enroll your VM in the Windows Insider Program. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Be sure to allow the necessary diagnostic data to be collected. Click the Get Started button, then click Link an Account and select the Microsoft account you use for the Insiders program. Click Continue.
  • You must then choose your preferred channel. Choose Channel Dev or Channel Beta and click Continue. Review the contract, click Continue and select Restart Now button to restart your VM.
  • Log back into Windows 11 and install Guest Additions for Oracle VM VirtualBox to improve its performance. To do this, click on the Devices menu and select Insert Guest Additions CD Image. Wait for the installation to start. If nothing happens, open File Explorer, select the entry for CD Drive (D 🙂 and double-click the VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe file.
