How to Setup VPN On Router – Guide
Nowadays you need as much internet security as possible. From telecommuting to simply watching your favorite show on a smart TV, the average consumer’s attack surface is three to four times what it was when most of us only had a PC. This is not only a concern but also a chore as you have to install protection software on all these devices. But while you can’t avoid installing separate antivirus software on each device, you can at least make your virtual private network (VPN) less annoying by bypassing the per-device procedure and simply installing a general VPN on your router. VPNs are essential to internet security for several reasons.
First, they make your computer appear to be in a different geographic location than where you are actually located. This is because you are logging into a server operated by the VPN provider and running your web sessions from there. This means that if cookies or big government agencies try to track you based on your web activity, they will find the VPN provider’s server, not you.
Better yet, just like you, hundreds or thousands of people will do the same thing on the same server. But VPNs do more than just anonymize your session. They also encrypt your traffic. VPNs can use a number of different encryption methods, but the most popular is the 128-bit or 256-bit AES standard.
How to Configure VPN on the Router
However, not all routers work with DD-WRT or Tomato, and not all VPNs. You will need to check the firmware compatibility list and installation instructions for your VPN subscription.
To define up a VPN router with new firmware
Check the DD-WRT and Tomato compatibility lists to see if any of them are compatible with your router. If not, it’s worth noting that there are alternative router firmwares available. If your router supports it, follow the instructions to install the firmware.
The exact method you will use to update the firmware depends on which firmware you choose and your router model. As such, we will avoid discussing details here. For more information on how to update DD-WRT and Tomato, check out these pages:
Get your VPN server information
Before exploring your router’s new firmware, you’ll need to get some specifics about your VPN. Your best bet here is to do a search for “set up [your VPN] [your firmware].” Then you can search for something like “set up IPVanish DD-WRT.”
Configure your VPN router
Once you find the information needed to activate the VPN, access your router’s firmware to configure it up. In DD-WRT, open Services > VPN and toggle Start OpenVPN Client to Enable. In Tomato, find VPN Tunneling in the left sidebar and select OpenVPN Client below it. Find everything you need on the Basics tab in Client 1. Enter the information collected in step 2. If your VPN provider requires more credentials or activation, add them where appropriate.
