How to Enable Captions and Subtitles in PowerPoint – Guide
If you are presenting a slide show to other people who communicate in a different language, you should use subtitles in Microsoft PowerPoint. This handy feature helps you speak to your audience without having to do the translation work yourself. If you have members of your audience who speak a different language or dialect, consider translating the slides and even creating two presentation forms. But with subtitles in Microsoft PowerPoint, you don’t have to do both.
You can communicate in your mother tongue and send real-time subtitles of each part spoken in any other language of your choice. You just want a connected and working microphone that has a secure web connection for live translation. You can then speak through each slide for everyone to understand.
How to To define Up Subtitles and Subtitles in MS PowerPoint
Install Office Mix
Click Get Office Mix on the Office Mix website to download the installer. Open the installer and in a few moments PowerPoint will launch with Office Mix installed. You will see a new MIX track at the top.
You can use slide recording feature in the new Mix panel to record narration on your slides and also record animations and interactions with your content. This audiovisual recording, synchronized with your slides, will become a “Mix” that will be subtitled. Note: to eventually export your presentation as a Mix, be sure to save your PowerPoint file in .pptx format.
Download your presentation as MP4 file for transcription
To prepare your presentation for transcription, you will need to save your file as .mp4, not .ppt. Go to MIX > Export to Video and select your video resolution based on the playback device. For video transcription purposes, you do not need to select a high resolution. Name and save your .mp4 file.
Submit your recording for transcription and subtitling
Go to the My Files page in your 3Play Media account and select your recording. Click Request Download and select DFXP format. Save the subtitle file to your computer.
Download your subtitles in DFXP format
Go to the My Files page in your 3Play Media account and select your recording. Click Request Download and select DFXP format. Save the subtitle file to your computer.
Convert DFXP to TTML format
Office Mix only accepts subtitle files in TTML format (.ttml). TTML is an XML file type, just like DFXP. If you change your DFXP subtitle file to TTML, Office Mix will accept it and be able to read it. Open your DFXP subtitle file in a simple word processor like Notepad. Go to File > Save As. Add “.ttml” to the final of the file name. Under Save file type as, select All files. Under Encoding, select UTF-8. Click Save and your subtitles will be saved as a TTML file.
Load TTML subtitle file for your mix
Open your PowerPoint document and click Upload to Mix. In the Upload to Mix panel, click next. Securely log in with your Microsoft, Google or Facebook login credentials to access your files in the cloud. On the next panel, select “This is a New Mix” and make sure to check the box for Enable playback on mobile devices. This exports a video that can be viewed in mobile and offline. If you do not check this box, subtitles feature will not work.
Click Next. When the mix is loaded, click Show Me My Mix. Fill in the title, category, description, etc. fields for your presentation. In the Captions section, click Upload TTML file. Select your TTML subtitle file from your computer and upload.
