How to recover software product keys from any PC Even a broken one – Guide

You often need to reinstall Windows for users. A very common and annoying problem that often occurs is that the user does not have his Windows license in hand and you have to spend time to get the genuine Windows product key from the system when the hard drive is readable. A big problem nowadays is that Windows product key stickers on many devices like laptops and netbooks are made of paper and don’t have a protective plastic coating, which means the key fades easily and can no longer be read accurately.

You might think you’ll never need to know your Windows product key and the sticker on the bottom of your laptop or the piece of paper you wrote on may be long gone. However, there may be times when you are asked to enter it. when you reinstall Windows or upgrade your computer. And if you don’t know what it is, it might be too late to find it and you really don’t want to have to pay for Windows again.

Windows 10 differs from its predecessors in that the top locators that worked so well in Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.1 are of little use now. Using a paid program like Recover Keys or free versions like Magic Jelly Bean KeyFinder may return a code, but there’s a good chance that this is a generic number used by manufacturers, not one that works, to activate your PC.

Method One

The first tool to try to recover your Windows product key is Lazesoft Recover My Password Home Edition. It is a relatively new program launched in 2012 (the Home ed.), and is specifically designed to do 2 things; recover your Windows product key from any version of Windows including Windows 2000 right up for Windows 8 and secondly it can reset passwords for local administrator and domain accounts. It’s also as easy to use as you would expect this kind of recovery task to get.

  • Download Recover My Password Home Edit and install the program. More experienced users can extract the installer and make the program portable with Universal Extractor.
  • Launch Recover My Password and press “Burn Bootable CD/USB Disk Now” and click Next.
  • On the media selection screen, you can choose to burn the Recover My Password WinPE image directly to CD, burn to USB flash drive, or save it as an ISO file to burn later. Press Commit when you have inserted the media or chosen an ISO save location. Depending on your system, some files will be automatically downloaded from that are part of the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) to help create the image.
  • When finished, close the program and boot the computer from which you want to recover the key with the CD or USB drive. Press enter in the Boot menu or let the timer count down to 30 seconds.
  • On the welcome screen, click on the large drop-down menu at the top and select “Find Windows Product Key”. If you have special third-party drivers that are needed to recognize your drives, they can be loaded from here as well. Click Next and confirm in the pop-upup that you are using the program for non-commercial use only.
  • Now Lazesoft Recover My Password will search and display the Windows product key(s) for your system. The good thing is that the program will automatically search all the active Windows partitions that you have on the system and will show you all the Windows product keys it finds.
  • Method Two

This second method uses the popular Hirens boot CD and an included utility from Nirsoft called Produkey, which can retrieve both Windows and Office keys from an offline Windows system.

  • Download the Hirens Boot CD if you don’t already have it and burn it to a CD, or if you like, put Hiren on a USB stick.
  • Boot the CD or USB, choose the Mini XP option and wait for the Windows desktop to load.
  • Click on the Hiren menu in the system tray and navigate to Passwords / Keys -> Product Keys -> ProduKey (Windows Key Viewer).
  • When Produkey is loaded, press F9 to open the Select Source window. Click the second option down “Load product keys from external Windows installations from all disks currently connected to your computer” and click OK.
