How to Create Bootable USB on Windows 11 – Guide

A Windows 11 bootable USB drive is the best way to install Windows 11. You can easily create one with a flash drive, a free download from Microsoft, and a Windows PC.

How to create a bootable Windows 11 USB with the media creation tool

The Media Creation Tool is the easiest method of creating bootable media for upgrading or a clean install of Windows 11. To create installation media with the Media Creation Tool, connect a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB of space and follow these steps.

  • Open the Windows 11 download page.
  • In the “Create Windows 11 Installation Media” section, click the Download Now button button to save the file to the device.
  • Double-click the MediaCreationToolW11.exe file to launch the tool.
  • Click on the Accept button button to agree to the terms.
  • (Optional) Uncheck Use recommended options for this PC.
  • Select the correct Windows 11 language and edition.
  • Click Next button.
  • Select the USB flash drive option.
  • Click Next button
  • Select the USB flash drive.
  • Click Next button.
  • Click Finish button.

    • After completing the steps, the tool will download the files needed to create bootable media, which you can then use to start a computer to install Windows 11.

    How to create Windows 11 bootable USB with Rufus

    Alternatively, you can also use Rufus, a free non-Microsoft tool that lets you create installation media to install Windows 11 on any supported hardware and software configuration. The utility provides two methods for creating installation media, including using an existing ISO file or directly downloading the file from Microsoft’s servers.

    Create USB Installation with Windows 11 ISO

    To create USB media with an existing Windows 11 ISO file, connect a flash drive with at least 8GB of space and follow these steps:

  • Open the Rufus download page.
  • In the “Download” section, click the link to save the latest version to your device.
  • Double-click the Rufus-x.xx.exe file to launch the tool.
  • In the “Device” section, select the USB flash drive.
  • In the “Startup Selection” section, click the Select button button on the right side.
  • Select the Windows 11 ISO file from the folder location.
  • Click on the Open button button.
  • Use the “Image Option” drop-down menu and select the Windows Standard Installation option (TPM 2.0, Safe Boot, 8GB+ RAM).
  • (Optional) Select the Windows Extended Installation (No TPM 2.0/No Secure Boot, 8GB+ RAM) option to create a USB flash drive for unsupported devices.
  • Use the “Partition Scheme” drop-down menu and select the GPT option.
  • Use the “Target System” drop-down menu and select the UEFI (non-CSM) option.
  • In the “Show advanced drive properties” section, do not change the default settings (unless you know what you are doing).
  • In the “Volume label” field, confirm a name for the bootable media – for example, “win11_usb”.
  • In the “File System” and “Cluster Size” options, do not change the default settings.
  • Click on Show advanced format options button.
  • Check the Quick Format option.
  • Check the Create extended label and icon files option.
  • Click on the Start button button.
  • Click OK button button Confirm.
  • Click the Close button button.

    • After completing the steps, Rufus will create a USB flash drive to install Windows 11 on a compatible computer, unless you selected the option to create a bootable one that ignores system requirements (not recommended).

    Create USB installation by downloading Windows 11 ISO

    To use Rufus to create a Windows 11 USB installer, plug in a USB drive with enough space and follow these steps:

  • Open the Rufus download page.
  • In the “Download” section, click the link to save the latest version to your device.
  • Double-click the Rufus-x.xx.exe file to launch the tool.
  • click on settings button (third button from left) at the bottom of the page.
  • In the “Settings” section, use the Check for updates drop-down menu and select the Daily option.
  • Click the Close button button.
  • Close the Rufus tool.
  • Restart the Rufus tool.
  • In the “Device” section, use the drop-down menu to select the USB flash drive.
  • In the “Startup Selection” section, click the down arrow button on the right and select the Download option.
  • Click the Close button button.
  • Close the Rufus tool.
  • Restart the Rufus tool.
  • In the “Device” section, use the drop-down menu to select the USB flash drive.
  • In the “Startup Selection” section, click the down arrow button on the right and select the Download option.
  • Click on the Continue button button.
  • Use the “Edit” drop-down menu and select Windows 11 Home/Pro option.
  • Click on the Continue button button.
  • Use the “Language” drop-down menu and select your installation language.
  • Click on the Continue button button.
  • Use the “Architecture” drop-down menu and select 64-bit as Windows 11 does not come in 32-bit.
  • Click on Download button.
  • Select a folder location to download the ISO file.
  • Click on the Save button button.
  • Use the “Image Option” drop-down menu and select the Windows Standard Installation option (TPM 2.0, Safe Boot, 8GB+ RAM).
  • (Optional) Select the Windows Extended Installation (No TPM 2.0/No Secure Boot, 8GB+ RAM) option to create a USB flash drive for unsupported devices.9.
  • Use the “Partition Scheme” drop-down menu to select the GPT option.

  • Click OK button button Confirm.
  • Click the Close button button
