How to Delete Hyperlinks from MS Word Docs – Guide
No doubt you pasted text from a web page or other document into Word and noticed there was a hyperlink. I find this incredibly irritating; with rare exceptions, I never want hyperlinks to be active in my Word documents. Microsoft Word 2013 recognizes structured text as web URLs and automatically converts them to hyperlinks by default. Although you can right-click on a single URL and remove the hyperlink, if there are a large number of links, the solution will be tedious. To save time and nerves, use Word’s linking method to remove all hyperlinks at once without changing the original unlinked text.
Remove a single hyperlink
Most of the time, it’s just one or a few hyperlinks that need to be removed from a document/paragraph. The process for doing this is-
For macOS users, the remove hyperlink option is not directly available when you right click on one of them. Instead, on macOS, you first need to select Link from the quick edit menu and then click Remove Hyperlink in the next window.
Remove all hyperlinks at once
If you’re one of those people who copy a lot of data from sites like Wikipedia and paste it into a Word document for later editing, removing all the hyperlinks at once might be the way to go. Who would like to right click about 100 times and remove each hyperlink individually, right?
Fortunately, Word has the option of removing all hyperlinks from a document or a particular part of the document using a single keyboard shortcut.
On some personal computers, the user will also need to press the fn key to make the F9 key functional. So if pressing “Ctrl + Shift + F9” did not remove the hyperlinks, try pressing “Ctrl + Shift + Fn + F9”.
For macOS users, the keyboard shortcut to select all text is “Cmd + A” and once selected, press “Cmd + 6” to remove all hyperlinks.
Remove hyperlinks when pasting text
If you have difficulty remembering keyboard shortcuts or don’t like to use them in general (why?), you can also remove the hyperlinks when pasting themselves. Word has three (four in Office 365) different pasting options, each serving a different need, and we explain them all below, along with the guide about how to remove hyperlinks when pasting text.
You will now see three different ways to paste the copied text. The three options are:
Keep original formatting (K)
As is evident from the name, the Paste option Keep original formatting keeps the formatting of the copied text as is, ie the text when pasted using this option will look the same as it did when copying. The option retains all formatting features such as font, font size, spacing, indents, hyperlinks, etc.
Merge Formatting (M)
Collage of merge formatting feature is perhaps the smartest of all the collage options available. It merges the formatting style of the copied text with the surrounding text in the document it was pasted into. words, the merge formatting option removes all formatting from the copied text (except some formatting you consider important, for example bold and italic text) and provides formatting for the document into which it is pasted.
Keep text only (T)
Again, as the name makes clear, this pasting option just retains the text of the copied data and discards everything else. Any and all formatting along with images and tables are removed when data is pasted using this pasting option. The text adopts the formatting of the surrounding text or the entire document and tables, if any, are converted to paragraphs.
Image (U)
The Paste Image option is only available in Office 365 and allows users to paste text as an image. This, however, makes it impossible to edit the text, but you can apply any image effects, such as borders or rotation, as you normally would to an image or image.
Going back to the need of the hour, since we just want to remove the hyperlinks from the copied data, we will use the Paste option Keep text only.
Disable hyperlinks completely
To make the typing and documentation process more dynamic and intelligent, Word automatically transforms email addresses and website URLs into hyperlinks. While the feature is very useful, there’s always a time when you just want to write a URL or email address without turning it into a clickable hyperlink. Word allows the user to disable auto-generating hyperlinks feature completely. The procedure to disable the feature The following is:
