How to make Windows 11 more like Windows 10 – Guide
Microsoft knows what you want Windows to look like. That, at least, seems to be the company’s message with Windows 11. It introduces major changes to the user interface and continues the trend of making user personalization difficult. It’s currently not possible to completely revert Windows 11 to Windows 10, and given Microsoft’s current attitude towards UI customization, that may never happen. Still, there are several important changes that can make you more comfortable.
For better or worse, you upgraded to Windows 11 or did a clean install of Windows 11, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with every aspect of the new UI. Maybe, like me, you hate the new Start Menu because it gives you fewer icons when you take up more space. Maybe you’re upset because the right-click menu only shows seven options at a time – and not necessarily the best seven – and then lets you click “Show more options” to see them all. Or you just want the ribbon back in Windows Explorer.
The good news is that with a combination of registry tweaks, third-party apps, and a few different artworks, you can get a lot of the Windows 10 look and feel back on Windows 11. The bad news is that Microsoft doesn’t seem to want that. you go back to the previous UI so you can disable any registry hacks that you might use in future updates. Below, we’ll describe several changes to different parts of the UI, and you can use one, many, or all of them to get the look you want.
Move taskbar icons to the left
Centered Taskbar Icons Are One of Windows 11’s Most Controversial New features, but also one of the easiest to change:
Restore the old Start Menu
It’s worth saying that there’s no way to make the Windows 11 Start menu look exactly like it does in Windows 10. But there are three third-party apps that do a pretty good job. OpenShell is a free option and requires no registry changes, but it looks more like legacy versions of Windows than Windows 10 specifically. There are still plenty of customization options, including a choice between three classic Start Menu styles. To avoid errors, be sure to move the taskbar to the left first.
For something a little more advanced, try StartIsBack++. This adds back all the functionality you might be missing in Windows 11, although it looks a lot more like Windows 7 than it does Windows 10. You’ll need to change the taskbar using the registry (method below) first, and it costs US $3.99 after a 30 day trial.
Start11 is still in beta at the time of writing and requires the same registry changes. It’s the polished option available, offering several themes that look a lot like Windows 10. The big caveat is the price – it’s £4.99/$4.99 for every 30 days of access.
Recover the old taskbar
This trick involves making changes to the registry, so only go ahead if you feel comfortable doing so. It’s surprising to see it still works, but expect Microsoft to block it soon. There are also several icons that don’t work, including Cortana and a non-functional taskbar. But for pure aesthetics, this does the job.
Note that you will need to have the desired Start menu installed before proceeding.
You should now have a taskbar and start menu much more in keeping with previous versions of Windows. However, several system icons are missing – here it is how to retrieve them:
You can also disable Cortana by right-clicking on the taskbar and unchecking the ‘Show Cortana’ option.
File Explorer received a major overhaul in Windows 11, but it’s not always easy to navigate. If you already followed the steps above to change the taskbar, it and the context menus will revert to the Windows 10 style. However, if you prefer to use the old File Explorer and context menus without changing the bar tasks, here’s what you need to do:
