How to Use VirtualBox to Install Windows 11 on Ubuntu 20.04 – Guide
I regularly encourage people to use Linux, and whenever I give them reasons to change, I always mention that if they are “afraid of Linux”, they can use Windows and Linux together. One way to use the two systems together is to boot Windows and Linux twice. It works fine, except you need to switch between operating systems by restarting the system. This is a little inconvenient.
If, like me, you’re a rare Windows user and don’t want to mess around with dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 10, I suggest installing Windows 10 on Linux by creating a virtual machine. in a previous tutorial I showed you how to install VMWare on Ubuntu, but in this one we are using Oracle VirtualBox to create virtual machines and install Windows 10 on it.
Download and install VirtualBox
First, download and install VirtualBox from the VirtualBox wiki. The software download is free and available for non-commercial use. After downloading the .exe file, click on it and follow the onscreen instructions to properly install it on your system.
Optional step: Download and install the VirtualBox extension package from the VirtualBox Downloads page. You can skip this step, but installing it can improve and add features to your VirtualBox machine. Through this package you can get features like mouse integration, internet connectivity, USB support and others features. You can install the package by clicking on the downloaded file and following the instructions.
Download Windows 11 Enterprise Virtual Machine
Next, download a copy of the Windows 11 installation files in OVA format. You can get these files from the Microsoft Virtual Machine download page. Be sure to download the virtual disk image for VirtualBox.
Import OVA files
Open and extract the downloaded files. Then double click the extracted file to open it. This will automatically open your VirtualBox and Import Virtual Device dialog. Here you can change the settings and the location of the machine’s home folder. Be sure to check the box that says Import hard drives as VDI. If you are satisfied with the settings, click Import.
Wait for the virtual machine to upload to your VirtualBox. Once this is done, you can now open and use the Windows 11 Enterprise Virtual Machine.
Common issues encountered when opening the Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine in VirtualBox
You finally installed the Windows 11 development environment on your VirtualBox. But unfortunately you cannot open the virtual machine and run the operating system. This can be frustrating, especially after correctly following the steps mentioned above.
But don’t worry, we’ve listed below the common issues faced when opening the Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine in VirtualBox and how to Fix them.
Failed to open a session for virtual machine error
If you’re getting an error that says “Can’t enable nested VT-x / AMD-V without nested paging and unrestricted guest execution!,” it’s highly likely that your Hyper-V, a native virtual machine on your Windows 10 system , is enabled. In some cases, disabling this will cause the trick. Here it is how to fix this problem:
UEFI Interactive Shell opens instead of booting Windows 11
Another problem you might encounter when opening this virtual machine is getting UEFI interactive shell window instead of booting the system. Do not worry; there is nothing wrong with the machine you installed. You may have accidentally enabled the EFI setting on your machine. To fix this problem, please follow the steps below:
