For many iPhone users, WhatsApp is a cross-functional, cross-platform communication tool. Whether you want to share photos or videos with your friends, keep in touch with your family / friends around the world, or just want to share some documents with your colleague, WhatsApp is the first thing that comes to mind for most smartphone users . But what if WhatsApp doesn’t work on your iPhone?

Many iPhone users have reported various WhatsApp issues, including not sending or receiving messages, WhatsApp notifications not working on iOS 13, or app crashing issues. If you are experiencing these issues, here is our troubleshooting guide to help you fix WhatsApp crashes, connection issues, or iPhone not working. The steps mentioned work with all iPhone models, including the iPhone 11 series and the latest iPhone SE 2020.

What to do when WhatsApp is not working on your iPhone

Restart your iPhone

When WhatsApp is not working, the first thing to do is restart the iPhone, which can resolve minor glitches or software bugs occasionally. To reset iPhone, press and hold the power button button (also known as Sleep/Wake button) until the power slider appears on the screen.

If your iPhone has Face ID, press and hold the side simultaneously button and any volume button. release both buttons when “slide to turn off” appears on the screen. Drag the power icon from left to right to turn off iPhone.

Wait about thirty seconds, then press and hold the power or side button button again until the Apple logo appears in the center of the screen.

Close WhatsApp on your iPhone

When WhatsApp is not working on your iPhone, there is a reasonable chance that the app itself is not working properly. Sometimes closing the app and reopening it can fix these minor app glitches.

To close WhatsApp, double click on Home button Open up the app switcher, which displays all the apps currently open on your iPhone. If your iPhone doesn’t have one Home button, slide up from the bottom of the screen to the center of the screen. Hold your finger in the center of the screen until the app switcher opens.

Once the app switcher opens, slide WhatsApp up and off screen. You’ll know it’s closed when it no longer appears in the application switcher.

Check WhatsApp server status

Occasionally important apps like WhatsApp undergo routine server maintenance. You may not be able to use WhatsApp during server maintenance. Take a look at these reports to see if your WhatsApp servers are down or under maintenance. If they are, you just have to wait. WhatsApp will be online soon!

Delete WhatsApp and reinstall it

Another way to troubleshoot a faulty app is to delete it and then reinstall it on iPhone. If a file on WhatsApp gets corrupted, deleting the app and reinstalling it will give the app a fresh start on your iPhone.

Press and hold the WhatsApp icon until the menu appears. Tap Remove app -> Delete app -> Delete. Don’t worry – your WhatsApp account will not be deleted if you uninstall the app from your iPhone, but you will have to re-enter your login information when you open the app again after reinstalling it.

To reinstall WhatsApp on your iPhone, open the App Store and tap the Search tab at the bottom of the screen. Type “WhatsApp” into the search bar and tap the cloud icon to the right of WhatsApp in the results.

Check for an update to WhatsApp

App developers frequently release updates to their apps in order to add new ones features and fix existing bugs. If you are running an outdated version of the app, it may be the reason why WhatsApp is not working on your iPhone.

To check for an update, open the App Store and tap your account icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Scroll down to find the list of apps with available updates. If an update is available for WhatsApp, tap Update button on the right, or tap Refresh All at the top of the list.

Turn Wi-Fi off and on again

If you use Wi-Fi while using WhatsApp, the app may not be working due to a problem with your iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection. Like resetting the iPhone, turning Wi-Fi off and on can sometimes fix minor bugs or connectivity failures.

To turn off Wi-Fi, open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, and tap the button next to Wi-Fi. You’ll know Wi-Fi is off when the button is grayed out. To turn Wi-Fi back on, tap the switch again – you’ll know it’s on when it’s green!

Forget your Wi-Fi network and reconnect

A more detailed Wi-Fi troubleshooting is to forget about your Wi-Fi network and reconnect your iPhone to it. When you connect to a Wi-Fi network for the first time, iPhone stores information about how to connect to that Wi-Fi network.

If any part of this process changes, it could affect iPhone’s ability to connect to the Wi-Fi network. When you forget about the network and reconnect, it’s like connecting your iPhone to the Wi-Fi network for the first time.

To forget about a Wi-Fi network, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi and tap Info button (look for blue hi) next to the Wi-Fi network you want iPhone to forget about. Then tap Forget this network -> Forget.

Reset Network Settings

Resetting the network settings erases all Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular and VPN settings from the iPhone. Be sure to write down your Wi-Fi passwords before completing this step. You will have to re-enter them when the reset is complete.

When you’re done, open Settings and tap General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. Enter your password and tap Reset network settings to confirm your decision.
